Transcoding Files with MediaCoder

From MITVWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

If you are dealing with video formats that you aren't able to edit, or you want to export your Movie Maker videos into something other than [wmv] then you will need to learn a little bit about transcoding.

Transcoding is the conversion of video from one codec to another, this is similar to translating a language but actually more like changing the compression format.

MediaCoder is a relatively easy to use GUI video compression tool available for people using the Windows operating system. It can also be ran under Wine in the Linux environment.

The interface is a little complex for beginners and there is currently no documentation. Eventually this entry will seek to change that by at least providing a simple tutorial for how to convert DV edited files to hi-quality hi-compression H.264 for people without expensive rendering built into their editors.

At this point though I'm running under Ubuntu and I don't have MediaCoder installed to even begin writing the tutorial.
