MPG or mpg is a three-letter acronym, the shortened version of MPEG.

The Moving Picture Experts Group or MPEG is a working group charged with the development of video and audio encoding standards.

The quality at standard VCD resolution and bitrate is near the quality and performance of a VHS tape. As cheaper and more powerful consumer decoding hardware became available, more advanced formats such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 were developed.
