FLV (Flash Video) is a proprietary file format used to deliver video over the Internet using Adobe Flash Player. FLV content may also be embedded within SWF files. Notable users of the FLV format include YouTube, Reuters, Yahoo and MySpace.
Flash Video is viewable on nearly all operating systems. Commonly FLV files are a variant of the H.263 or On2 TrueMotion VP6 video standards. It is computationally complex and might not run well on older systems.
Audio in FLV files is usually encoded as MP3, and the proprietary Nellymoser codec. FLV files also support uncompressed audio or ADPCM format audio.
Macromedia did not choose MP4, which can safely be considered a major missed opportunity for improving the quality of video on webpages. Unfortunately, this did not stop it from becoming the de facto standard for streaming videos with mostly very low quality over the web.
