DV Camcorders

Most consumer camcorders made in the past few years will be DV camcorders. These camcorders record to miniDV tape (and rarely to Digital8 tape) and have firewire output to connect it to a computer. Because of their popularity, these cameras will work with almost any editing system. Some important things to consider when buying a DV camcorder are

1. Is it PAL (UK standard) NTSC (US standard) or something else? tapes recorded on an NTSC camera will not play on a PAL camera, and vice versa....

2. Does it have a socket (mini-jack or XLR) to plug in an external microphone?

3. Does it have a headphone socket so that you can monitor the sound levels?

4. Is it a 'three chip' camera that will create high resolution footage that may be acceptable to broadcasters?

5. Does it have a decent night shot so that you can cover events even in the darkness?

6. Does it have a video analog in socket so that you can record video from an external spycamera lens or old fashioned analog video source?
